Beat Diabetes Report/ Published: Apr-12-2020

Gerald has been diabetic since 4 years. He is overweight and also has a family history of hypertension, obesity and diabetes. His primary goal is to manage diabetes.

Since following a regular diet for diabetes has not helped him in the past, Gerald decided to go the extra mile and went in for a holistic approach and consulted a nutritionist who offered genotype-based solutions. Here’s how he benefited from My Gene Story’s Beat Diabetes report.

Key Findings

DNA-based Plan

  • Even though Gerald’s carbohydrate response is typical, given the fact that he has diabetes, he was recommended to include foods which are low and moderate on the GI scale, while strictly avoiding high GI foods.
  • He was asked to discontinue regular milk and was advised to only consume lactose-free products
  • Foods rich in vitamins A and Vitamin E were increased in the diet to make up for the poor scores.
  • He was asked to reduce MUFA rich fat sources (avocado, almonds, olive oil) from his diet, and replace them with PUFA rich sources (fatty fish, walnuts, flax seeds).
  • Given his higher risk for diabetic nephropathy and cataract, he now knows the complications he should be more vigilant about and this led him to take precautionary measures at an early stage.

What’s Gerald up to now?

  • A routine blood test indicated that there was no major spike in Gerald’s blood sugar level in the 6 months after following the new diet.
  • He started losing weight and found an improvement in his stamina and energy levels.
  • Initially starting off with a few days a week, Gerald now runs every day and even plans to train to run his first 10K.
  • He also follows up regularly with his physician and his routine checkups include parameters to keep a check on all the health risks indicated in the genetic report.
